What is the usage of "明日までに"? How to say "Please pay back the money before tomorrow." in Japanese?

Please pay back the money before tomorrow.

明日までにお金を返してください。

お金を明日までに返してください。

What needs attention is this までに, you may not often see this combination. But in fact, if you know the grammar of に very well, you will find that you can add a time period or time point before に.

"明日まで" is a specific time point. You can think of it as directly indicating that it is before 0:00 tomorrow, so there can be + "に" after this.

Maybe your teacher used these when giving examples:

  • today (きょう)
  • yesterday (きのう)
  • last year (きょねん)
  • coming week (らいしゅう)
  • etc.

However, please note that "明日まで" should also be an example of them. It's just that it's easy for the educator to ignore this, and you will meet it sometime in the future.

Then you start to wonder if you can add "に" after "まで". The fact is that when you treat "明日まで" as a whole, the problems are solved.
